Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. She joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
